eyes on a driveway in suburban detroit where authorities will dig in search of human remains. nbc's john yang is there for us. john, good morning. >> reporter: the path for the search for jimmy hoffa has been a long and twisted one, and today it does come here to this driveway in suburban detroit. they are going to take soil samples today to see if the answer to the mystery lies here. more than 37 years after jimmy hoffa vanished without a trace the trail has led to this suburban home. an informant claims he saw a body buried her around the time hoffa went missing. he told dan muldea, the author of "the off anwar sadats." >> very convinced hoffa is buried at this particular location. >> we believe the witness saw something and it was credible enough that we have to continue the investigation at this point. >> reporter: using ground-penetrating radar, authorities found signs of something about two feet under the driveway. today they will take a soil sample to look for evidence of human remains. hoffa was last seen outside a detroit-area restaurant in 1975, apparently lured by two m

out to our west, even down in texas coming up toward kansas and missouri and in toward detroit this morning. we're watching some of those showers. behind the front, got some cooler air trying to move in. that's going more east than south. ahead of the front the warm stuff. the low to mid-80s like what we'll be seeing for this afternoon. a couple of clouds streaming in off the appalachians but as far as the futurecast, looks like a quiet day. could be an isolated shower toward norfolk, virginia beach. tonight we'll watch the front get closer and closer to us. here it is coming in overnight. by tomorrow morning 6:00 a.m. passing d.c. but without much in the way of fanfare. maybe a few showers up in southern new york and well east of us. then tomorrow we return back into the sunshine with high temperatures in the 70s. looks very nice for the weekend. 83 today. pretty nice, right? tonight a stray shower mainly north of town. lows in the low 60s d.c., mid- 50s north and west. tomorrow upper 70s. a little breezy but a sunny day. sunday pleasant, clouds building a little bit more in t

detroit today. >> i was told a dead body might be buried in my backyard. >> reporter: not just any body, but that of jimmy hoffa, one-time boss of the teamsters, america's biggest union. he disappeared without a trace more than 37 years ago. a decade before patricia bought her home. >> he is the best-known dead body that they've been looking for for years. >> reporter: hoffa's connections to organized crime had spurred numerous theories about his disappearance in july of 1975. earlier this year, an informant told hoffa wars author he saw a body being buried at this suburban home around the time hoffa vanished. >> he's adamant about his beliefs hoffa is buried at this location. >> reporter: he pointed the informant to authorities. their initial check days ago with ground penetrating radar revealed something about two feet below the home's driveway. today with a crowd of onlookers, police were back to take two soil samples, digging down about six feet. >> there was no visible remains that you could see through the tube. the samples are kind of muddy and it's hard to distinguish any partic

a number of districts, detroit for example has seen declinement which is going to affect your per people allocation, so there's a little bit of a squeeze play there in terms of funding and the district -- [inaudible] in a -- so no exaggeration to say there's a bit of a squeeze play with the funding there. host: how much of an increase were they asking for? how much was the mayor willing to go for? guest: so the -- complicated by the fact that the school board rescinded 47 had already agreed upon wages so that plays into the figure the union was asking. again, different figure systems loaded. i've seen anywhere from 19% in the first year alone of a contract to 30% over a four-year period. again, we don't know what actually is in the framework that has been agreed upon by district and union, but teachers, they did want to see an increase. they did want to see some of the wages that had been rescinded, restored, so we're going to have to see how that plays out. host: from new york, noel is an educator. you're on "washington journal." go ahead. caller: yes. i'm in agreement to the teachers c
